How can we make sand for our model of Ancient Egypt?
We are learning about Ancient Egypt and want to make a large model for the shared area. We are making it from 8 squares of corraflute (60cm x 60cm) but we need to make it more desert like.
We have some buckets of earth, soil, and rocks.
How could we separate the sand from the soil sample?

The cycle of life
No...not the bicycle of life!
Today our garden monitor came into class with this!
We have successfully grown rice in our Year 3 garden!
As you can see there is not enough to make a meal but we have gone from seed to plant to seed...a complete cycle of life.
We were talking about the rock cycle earlier on as well as the water cycle.
Are there any other cycles which you can think of? (apart from the ones with wheels!)

Cool lava!...no really, it is actually cool enough to touch!
We are really lucky to have a recent visitor to Iceland in our class, who returned to Bangkok hours after the volcanic activity started.

Ancient Egypt Vocabulary Graphic Organiser
We used this graphic organiser to help become more familiar with words connected with Ancient Egypt.
We worked in groups and this meant that we had to listen, talk, think, cooperate, and help each other learn to say and start to understand these words.

T Ball Success
Lesser known cousin of baseball and softball, Tball is a game which we have been learning in PE.

Multiplying Marvels

Residential day 1

We're having a great time on our residential visit.
As I write, peaceful crickets chirp in the distance and the sound of noisy children is absent...it is bedtime and, fingers crossed, everyone is asleep...more news tomorrow!

Measuring Capacity accurately
We made some jelly yesterday because:
First of all I didn't read the instructions and made one really badly. I used cold water, and put in the wrong amount. The jelly I made was DISGUSTING.
Which other recipes have you made at home?
- it tastes good
- when cool it is refreshing
- it helped us learn to measure the right amounts of water (capacity) using L and ml
- we were learning about reading and writing instructions and jelly has easy to understand instructions.

DT Photo frames
We will be making picture frames as part of our DT curriculum. We will be designing after looking at a selection of frames. Children will need to bring in a photo. Here is a copy of the message which children have written into their Red Contact Books.
Remember to bring a photo into school. It should be the one you want to put into your frame.
If possible they should also try to bring in a small photo frame which you have at home, but make sure it is not too valuable or delicate. (Well done to Annabel for bringing in the first one!)

Instructions - describe my shape
Today we sat back to back and gave instructions how to make small models from cubes.
We used bossy verbs (imperatives) to start sentences and we had to use lots of detailed language to make the model look like the picture.

We also noticed that it is really helpful if you have a what you need section of your instructions.

Coketooth Tuesday update
Well the tooth had a break from the coke at the weekend (I forgot to put it back in the coke after taking the Friday pictures!)Here is the Tuesday picture...still in one piece and it even has some white enamel showing.
The picture below shows some mould which started to grow on the surface of the coke.
I wonder why that happened?
I cleaned it off with a tissue and the tooth sits at the bottom of the glass beaker.
Tomorrow is the last day of school so who knows what will be there when we get back on Tuesday 5th January.

Data gathering
We are asking and answering questions in our maths lessons.

We found out the most popular day in 3W.
We used a tally to collect the information. We used a class register to make sure the data was complete. We turned the tally into a frequency diagram by adding it up.

Measuring carefully and solving problems
We were finding out how many hand heights are the same as our body height.
Some of us used this information to predict how tall a giant was by using a hand print.
